Docking a boat in wind is not simply a matter of using more throttle. At low speed, wind and current can move the boat sideways, turn the bow or stern, and change the closing speed before you reach the berth. Good marina manoeuvring starts with identifying those forces, deciding which one is dominant and planning how you will use or work against it.
This guide focuses on wind-aware docking for recreational powerboats, with the current included because Sydney marina approaches are often affected by both. How do you dock a boat in wind?
First, work out where the wind and current want to take the boat. Approach at the slowest speed that still gives you control, set up on the upwind or up-current side when appropriate, prepare fenders and lines early, and use short, deliberate gear inputs. Watch how the whole boat moves against fixed objects. If the angle, speed or available room stops matching your plan, leave the berth and reset.
Start by identifying the dominant force
Before entering the confined part of a marina, pause in safe water and answer these questions:
- Where is the wind coming from, and is it steady or gusting?
- Which way is the current flowing?
- Are wind and current working together or opposing each other?
- Which force is actually having the greatest effect on this boat?
- If you select neutral now, where will the bow, stern and whole boat go?
Do not assume that the biggest number is automatically the dominant force. A tall cruiser with a flybridge, clears and a large cabin can be strongly affected by wind. A lower-profile boat with more hull below the water may respond more to current.
Use several clues: flags, ripples, floating debris, movement around piles, mooring lines and the way nearby boats are sitting. Keep reassessing as you move. Buildings, headlands, sheds and large vessels can create wind shadows or funnel gusts, while piles, seawalls and narrow marina entrances can alter the current.

Work against the dominant force when the berth allows
Approaching into wind or current often gives you more control because the force helps reduce your speed over the ground. NSW Government guidance uses this principle for approaching a mooring, noting that it is usually easiest to approach towards the wind or current.
The same principle can be useful in a marina, but it is not an automatic rule. The berth direction, surrounding boats, available turning room and your propulsion system still determine whether that approach is safe. The purpose is to maintain control against the force, not to follow a slogan blindly.
Understand speed through the water and speed over the ground
This distinction is especially important in current. If the boat is travelling into a two-knot current at approximately two knots through the water, its speed over the ground may be close to zero. Water can still be moving past the hull, rudder or drive while the boat barely moves relative to the marina.
That makes current a useful brake. With the bow into the current, progressively reduce power until the boat is almost stationary over the ground. Small increases or decreases in thrust can then move the boat forward or back relative to the berth without carrying unnecessary momentum towards it.
Do not confuse slow progress over the ground with a lack of control. In stronger wind or current, you may need meaningful engine thrust while maintaining very little movement relative to the dock.
Use a ferry glide or crab angle for sideways forces
If current is flowing across your intended path, the bow does not always point directly at the place you want to reach. Point slightly into the current and maintain enough forward thrust to keep control. The engine resists being swept downstream while the current moves the boat sideways. This controlled sideways movement is commonly called ferry gliding.
A crab angle applies the same planning idea to a crosswind or cross-current. Start slightly upwind or up-current, point the bow into the force and allow for the whole boat’s sideways track. The stronger the sideways force, the larger the correction may need to be.
Judge the boat’s movement against fixed references such as piles, pontoon corners and neighbouring boats. Look forward, aft and sideways. The bow can appear clear while the stern is moving quickly towards a hazard.

Prepare before entering the berth
- Set fenders at the correct height and position for likely contact.
- Rig the lines you expect to use and keep them clear of the water and propellers.
- Choose which line should be secured first and explain why.
- Give each crew member one clear job and agree on simple communication.
- Keep hands, feet and legs inside the boat; nobody should jump for the dock.
- Identify traffic, hazards and the space you will use if you need to go around.
This work must happen before the boat reaches the berth. Wind and current do not pause while lines are untangled or instructions are changed.
Step by step: docking in wind and current
1. Pause and read the conditions
Remain outside the tightest part of the marina while you assess wind, current, wash, available room and other traffic. Decide what will happen when you select neutral.
2. Test the boat’s low-speed response
In safe, open water, apply a brief gear input and return to neutral. Observe acceleration, stopping distance, steering response and which end the wind or current moves most. This is particularly important on an unfamiliar or differently loaded boat.
3. Set up on the useful side
If the force will move you sideways, begin upwind or up-current when the available space permits. Build the expected drift into the approach instead of aiming at the final position and correcting late.
4. Choose the approach and the escape
Picture the line the whole boat should follow, where the movement should stop and which line will control the dominant force. Then decide exactly where you will turn, reverse or continue ahead if the berth is not available.
5. Build only useful momentum
Use enough thrust to retain control without carrying excess speed towards the berth. Make speed corrections early. Momentum becomes harder to remove as space reduces.
6. Make one deliberate input at a time
Set the steering, select gear briefly, return to neutral when appropriate and observe the result. Give the boat time to respond. Large, rapid corrections can create a second problem before the first movement settles.
7. Secure the line that controls the unwanted movement
The most useful first line may be a bow line, stern line or spring. It depends on the boat, berth and direction of the force. A correctly selected line, sometimes combined with gentle engine thrust, can prevent forward, aft or sideways movement. There is no universal first line for every arrival.
8. Reset early
If speed, angle or position is wrong, leave while you still have room. A go-around is good seamanship. It is safer and usually faster than trying to rescue a poor approach with large throttle inputs at the last moment.

Slow is pro
Slow speed creates thinking time and reduces the force of an error, but slow does not mean powerless. Use the thrust needed to retain control while keeping speed over the ground low.
Neutral is your best friend
Neutral lets you see what the boat and the environment are doing. Apply the thrust you need, return to neutral and assess the result. In stronger wind or current, however, remaining in neutral for too long can allow the environment to take control. Use neutral deliberately, not automatically.
Steer before gear
On boats with steerable propulsion, including outboards and sterndrives, set the steering angle before selecting gear whenever practical. The thrust is then directed where you want it from the moment the propeller starts pushing water. This is especially valuable when using short bursts during tight manoeuvring.
Adapt the technique to your propulsion system
There is no universal control sequence for every powerboat:
- Outboards and sterndrives direct thrust by turning the drive, so steering angle matters in ahead and astern.
- Conventional shaft-drive boats normally rely more on water flow across the rudder when moving ahead and can respond differently in reverse.
- Single-shaft vessels may experience prop walk, which can move the stern noticeably in one direction when astern is selected.
- Twin-engine boats can use independent ahead and astern inputs to rotate or reposition with limited forward movement.
- Pod and joystick systems can simplify combined movements, but the skipper still needs to understand windage, momentum and system limitations.
Using differential thrust on twin engines
With the steering centred, forward on one engine and reverse on the other can rotate many twin-engine boats with little forward movement. Use controlled inputs and wait for the response. Repeated large throttle changes can quickly create unwanted momentum.
Use thrusters early, not desperately
Bow and stern thrusters should support good positioning and engine control. Use them while the boat is still controlled rather than waiting until it has been blown well out of position. Strong environmental forces can reduce their effect, and some systems have operating or duty-cycle limits. Know the equipment fitted to your boat.
When the wind is pushing you onto the berth
Wind blowing towards the pontoon can help close the final gap. Set fenders first, position the boat roughly parallel with enough distance for the wind to work, reduce momentum and observe the drift. You may not need to drive all the way alongside.
The risk is arriving too quickly or becoming pinned against the berth. Do not continue powering towards the pontoon when the wind is already doing the job. Plan the departure too, because getting off the berth may be harder than arriving.
When the wind is pushing you away from the berth
Wind blowing off the berth is usually more demanding because the boat moves away as soon as useful thrust is removed. Use a deliberate approach angle, allow for the sideways drift and maintain positive control for longer. Have the correct line ready before entering the berth.
Once a suitable line is safely secured, it may be possible to use that line with gentle engine thrust to control the boat. The correct line and technique depend on the vessel and berth. Never ask a crew member to compensate for a poor approach by jumping, pulling hard or using their body to stop the boat.
When current is running along the berth
Where the layout allows, approach against the current. Reduce power progressively until the boat moves only slightly relative to the pontoon, then use small changes in thrust to control position. Approaching quickly with current behind you can produce much more speed over the ground and much less time to correct an error.
When current is pushing across the berth
Start on the up-current side and compensate before the current carries the boat away from the intended line. Use a controlled crab angle or ferry glide. Avoid becoming broadside to strong current unless that movement is deliberate and you have sufficient room, because current acting on the underwater hull can produce rapid sideways movement.
When wind and current oppose each other
This is why a fixed rule such as “always point into the wind” can fail. Observe the boat’s natural drift before entering confined water. A high-sided cruiser may follow the wind while another vessel is dominated by current. The balance can change as shelter, water depth and marina structures change.
Stay ready for gusts at the end of a marina row or when leaving the shelter of a larger vessel. Watch the water around piles and entrances for evidence that current direction or strength has changed.
NSW marina safety reminders
- Travel at a safe speed. NSW guidance says safe speed must give you enough time to stop or turn, and that manoeuvrability is affected by speed, wind, current and vessel design. Read the NSW safe-speed guidance.

- Minimise wash. Slow down well before congested areas and use only the speed needed for control. NSW rules prohibit excessive vessel wash.

Common mistakes when docking in wind and current
- Reacting to the last position: by the time you notice the drift, the force has already been acting on the boat.
- Approaching too fast: excess speed reduces thinking time and increases the force of contact.
- Going too slow to retain control: minimal speed is useful, but the boat still needs enough thrust to answer the controls.
- Using continuous power: this can hide how much momentum is building.
- Aiming directly at the final position: this ignores the sideways movement that will occur during the approach.
- Watching only the bow: the stern may be moving towards a pile or neighbouring boat.
- Using thrusters as a rescue plan: they work best as part of a controlled manoeuvre.
- Preparing lines too late: the boat keeps moving while the crew tries to organise equipment.
- Trying to save every approach: resetting early is a normal part of controlled boat handling.
