After reviewing 2,720 completed marine inspection reports containing 57,601 confirmed defects, one thing became clear: the problems buyers encounter most often are not always the problems that cost the most.
Across more than 11 years, five marine surveyors—including me—contributed to the inspections as BoatBuy evolved. Every vessel told its own story, often through something small: an unexplained engine vibration, a suspicious crack, a failed light or staining beneath a hatch.
After drafts, cancellations and duplicate reports were removed, the completed inspections contained just over 21 findings per boat. Some were minor maintenance items. Others needed further investigation or had the potential to become expensive. The useful question was rarely whether a boat had defects; it was which findings were routine, which were warning signs and which could materially affect the purchase.
About the data
This analysis was completed in August 2026. A category was counted when at least one confirmed finding in it appeared in a report. A report could contain findings in several categories, so the percentages overlap and should not be added together.
These results describe vessels inspected by BoatBuy and are not intended to represent every used boat in Australia.
Repair costs are broad Australian estimates based on industry pricing and experience—not the report data. Boat size, materials, access, labour and concealed damage can all change the final bill.
1. Cabin, cockpit and other non-navigation lighting
Found in 1,396 inspections—51.3% of reports
Boat lighting operates in a difficult environment. Salt, condensation and vibration can affect fittings, terminals and wiring. A failed cabin light might need nothing more than a new fitting, but repeated failures can indicate corroded terminals, moisture inside connections or deteriorated wiring concealed behind cabinetry.
Test every light individually, preferably when it is dark enough to see what is actually operating. Replacing an accessible fitting may cost a few hundred dollars. Locating an inaccessible wiring fault can require many hours of labour and potentially cost several thousand.
2. Windows, hatches and external seals
Found in 1,336 inspections—49.1% of reports
Gaskets flatten, sealants harden, acrylic panels craze and fasteners move as a boat flexes. The visible problem may be a tired seal, but the more important question is where any water has travelled.
Look for brown staining, swollen timber, lifting finishes, dampness inside lockers and persistent musty smells. Boats frequently have several openings of a similar age. If multiple seals begin failing together, replacing them and repairing wet linings or structural core can turn a modest job into a five-figure project.
3. Upholstery, canvas and clears
Found in 1,237 inspections—45.5% of reports
These components are continually exposed to ultraviolet light, salt, moisture and repeated movement. Stitching deteriorates, vinyl splits, zips fail and transparent panels become cloudy or brittle.
The findings are often dismissed as cosmetic, but split upholstery can retain water, failed covers leave the boat exposed and cloudy clears can reduce visibility. Minor repairs may cost hundreds, while a quality set of flybridge clears can begin at approximately A$8,000 and rise significantly with the boat’s size and complexity.
Frequency tells buyers which problems they are most likely to encounter. It does not determine which problem deserves the highest priority.
Common does not mean most serious
The three categories above were the most widespread, but not necessarily the most expensive. Engine mechanical problems ranked fifth by frequency. A major diesel engine replacement or complete repower can reach six figures.
A failed light is generally less serious than a major mechanical defect. But repeated electrical failures may expose a wider wiring problem. Likewise, a tired hatch seal may appear insignificant until moisture is found inside a structural core.
Three lessons from the data
1. Keep water on the outside
Small leaks rarely become less expensive with time. Look beyond the opening for evidence of where moisture may have travelled.
2. Investigate patterns
One failed component may be ordinary wear. Several similar failures can indicate a shared cause or a group of ageing parts.
3. Budget for the complete vessel
Several moderate repairs arriving together can materially change the true cost of ownership.
When I inspect a boat, I am not expecting it to be flawless. I am trying to establish an accurate and independent picture of its condition. Finding defects does not automatically mean walking away. It gives a buyer the information needed to investigate, obtain estimates, negotiate appropriately and plan future work.
Problems understood before purchase are generally much easier to manage than surprises discovered afterwards.
